Capital strength

The aftermath of the global financial crisis has resulted in increased regulation and a renewed focus on capital strength. At HSBC, in conjunction with our skilled teams, our financial strength allows us to attract and secure business with leading clients globally.

Join the Global Markets Analyst programme, and you will have a wide variety of long-term career options within your chosen discipline: Sales, Trading or Debt Capital Markets.

As a Global Markets Analyst you will join the Sales, Trading or Debt Capital Markets discipline. We believe in developing accomplished, well-rounded Analysts with cross-asset class knowledge and we have developed a uniquely structured rotational programme.

Throughout the 12-month programme, you will undertake three four-month rotations. The rotation structure allows you to spend two rotations within your hiring discipline and one rotation, out of discipline. For example, a Trading graduate will undertake two Trading rotations and one in either Sales or Debt Capital Markets.

The rotational programme provides exposure to a wide range of products and asset classes such as foreign exchange, credit, rates, equities and structured products and the many products traded in these areas, such as: flow and vanilla products, options, swaps, Medium Term Notes (MTNs) and Credit Default Swaps (CDS).

You will spend significant time getting to know the trading floor environment, learning how it functions and how asset classes relate to one another, to the HSBC Group and to the financial markets. Getting involved in a desk's day-to-day activity, Analysts are expected to take an active role, with significant responsibility.

Global Markets Sales

Join the Sales discipline and you will be struck by the diversity on offer. The ever-changing style, type and geography of the deals going through the team will mean a steep learning curve. Your work could cover infrastructure bonds, covered bonds, high-yield bonds, emerging markets and many others.

Outstanding service

Sales Analysts have high levels of intelligence, self-confidence and interpersonal skills. You will use all these to create and nurture relationships with external clients and internal business partners, allowing you to deliver an outstanding and comprehensive service.

We will expect you to communicate general market views and specific investment recommendations daily to our fixed income, equity and foreign exchange and derivative clients. Analysts will also help teams in capturing and booking trades and overseeing settlement issues. To do all this, you will be in constant contact with our syndicate desk and traders for pricing, trade ideas and market updates.

“We’re an international operation but our global presence comes with a local flavour. That’s a great advantage.” Anthony Normand, Managing Director, Global Markets Sales

Global Markets Trading

Trading Analysts are analytical, adaptable and quick-thinking professionals who work with colleagues all over the world to ensure the very best solutions are delivered to their clients.

Challenging rotations

Analysts in the Trading discipline will undertake rotations that involve executing client orders. You will communicate vital information to the Sales team, especially initial commentary on results and trading ideas. To do this you must be aware of news and order flows and be up-to-date with what is moving and shaping your markets.

As an Analyst on a Trading rotation, you will develop and deliver customised products and solutions to corporate clients, investors and financial institutions. You will be responsible for creating and pricing products using our pricing and risk models, sometimes including structured derivatives, and assist in the marketing and execution of transactions.

Never stand still

Change is a constant at HSBC, and you will need to actively embrace it. You will harness constantly developing technology to fulfil our clients' needs, and deal with markets that are different every day. Equally you will need to understand longer-term changes in the industry, such as ever-evolving regulatory systems and our clients' demands for ever-more sophisticated trading capabilities.

“This is a devolved, flat structure, where people have the latitude to get on with the job. This is a risk/reward environment, so it’s vital we treat people with respect. This makes for a more innovative atmosphere.” Peter Leather, Managing Director, Global Markets Trading

Debt Capital Markets

The Debt Capital Markets team originates, structures and distributes bond transactions for banks and insurance companies, supranationals, government agencies and corporations in developed and emerging markets.

Thriving on change

Market change is rapid and continuous. As a result of our strong balance sheet, international network and global resources, we take changes in regulations, investor demands, technology and macro economic cycles in our stride. In fact, we thrive on them. You will learn to deal with these in real time, making this an exciting programme now and an excellent platform for your future career.

Identifying trends, delivering solutions

You will work in a team that uses its market knowledge to identify future trends early and create solutions that help both investors and issuers. This is a team that develops sophisticated ideas and execution processes. Your role will be to undertake extensive research into companies and markets, be involved in pitching solutions, and conducting briefings and presentations to clients.

“Our Analysts will be expected to have value-added input to support our dialogue with clients. They will have access to a global network of expertise and resources. They need to leverage this to develop great solutions for the client. For the right person, that’s very exciting.” Roger J Thomson, European Head of Debt Capital Markets, Global Markets

The HSBC Summer Analyst Programme lasts for 10 weeks and is designed for ambitious penultimate year university students. This is a non-rotational programme taking place predominantly in our main hubs: London, New York, Hong Kong and Dubai. Our extensive range of opportunities covers all areas of Global Banking, Global Markets, Global Research, all areas of Global Infrastructure, HTS GBM Technology, Global Asset Management and Global Private Banking.

Whichever discipline you choose, the programme will act as a comprehensive introduction to that area of the Bank. Your programme will provide you with the platform to be considered for our Full-Time Analyst Programme. You will have the opportunity to show your genuine potential and develop the behaviours, skills and experience essential to enjoy a long-term career with us at HSBC.

The programme will comprise hands-on experience, excellent technical, behavioural and IT skills training and the opportunity to form very important networks with peers and business leaders alike. Just as importantly, each programme will act as an introduction to the culture and values of HSBC.

Taking all of these elements collectively, the HSBC Summer Analyst programme acts as an extended ‘assessment centre’ for people looking to join HSBC as a Full-Time Analyst once they finish university.

MBA Associate

HSBC is one of the world's largest international banking and financial services organisations. As part of our commitment to drive the business forward, we run an MBA Associate programme within Global Markets. Here we will use the full depth of experience and knowledge you have picked up on your MBA to put you on course for an impressive, international and potentially senior-level career.

On our full time programme, you will start with an in-depth six-week induction programme that will teach you all about HSBC's strategy, objectives and market positioning. You will also receive Global Markets technical and personal skills training, and be introduced to your global peer group. This will be an important worldwide network, giving you access to people with diverse skills and knowledge.

On completion of your training you will join your desk. Depending on your particular background, this could be Sales, Trading, Debt Capital Markets or Business Management. You will receive highly structured ongoing training and development, and regular access to business leaders. We will give you exposure to a wide range of products, as well as the responsibility and opportunities someone of your calibre deserves.

We encourage most students to join our Summer Associate Programme where possible, as a pipeline into our full time programme.

If you have an excellent academic record, a real interest in global financial services and a global business model, then the MBA Associate programme at HSBC is right for you.

Summer Associate Programme

We have developed a ten-week summer internship for our Global Banking [Advisory] and Global Markets business areas, taking place in a number of locations globally each year. If you are an ambitious first-year MBA student, this programme will provide you with the platform to apply for our Full-Time Associate Programme, and develop the skills and experience to enjoy a long-term career at HSBC.

The core elements

Your internship will comprise three core elements: a one-week induction including IT, technical and behavioural skills training; involvement in a live project or a number of transactions; regular networking and social events.

An insight into HSBC

Through both formal training and day-to-day experience, you will gain an insight into our competitive advantages in the markets and the financial services industry. In turn, throughout the programme, you will continue to deepen your understanding of our business, strategy and customers so you can enhance your contribution and impact.

Building your network

The Summer Associate Programme will provide you with the opportunity to establish a network of peers and leaders across Global Banking and Markets. You will be expected to build and leverage this network to maximise your effectiveness.

Developing your knowledge

The Programme's mix of practical experience, coaching and training will enable you to develop the knowledge and technical business skills you will need to be successful. Regular business feedback on your performance from your line manager and colleagues will help you maximise your development throughout the summer.

Ongoing support

At every stage, you will be able to call on your Associate Development Advisor and Line Manager for coaching and advice regarding your personal development. You will also be allocated a buddy to share ideas, give you guidance and provide all-round support.

Pass your assessments

The ultimate aim of the Summer Associate Programme is to support you in developing the skills that will help you become a full-time 2012 Global Banking and Markets Associate. To that end, it is a good idea to see your internship as an extended assessment centre.

Upon joining your team, you will be assessed on your technical knowledge, analytical skills, communication skills, teamwork and attitude. Your line manager will set specific and measurable objectives at the beginning, manage your performance throughout your 10 weeks with us, and conduct your mid-programme and end-of-programme reviews, offering support and guidance throughout.

Foundation for success

Those who have joined us on this internship previously, have found that the Internship provides a solid foundation for future success in HSBC. Not only does it offer a comprehensive introduction to our culture, strategy and values, it also equips you with some of the essential technical skills you need to launch a successful career as a full-time Associate.
