If you have seen an opportunity you are interested in and are looking forward to working with us to shape the future of banking, we recommend that you complete your online application as soon as possible. In addition, we request that you only apply for one programme in one region per recruitment year. To help you make an informed decision regarding which of our programmes to apply to – Analyst, Summer Analyst, MBA Associate or MBA Summer Associate – we recommend that you bear the following advice in mind. This will also be useful when completing your application and when demonstrating your potential throughout the selection process:
Research:
- Ensure you have carefully researched HSBC, the industry and the business area you are applying for prior to submitting your application and to ensure you are making the decision that best matches your skills and aspirations
- In the first instance, we offer a large amount of detailed information on this website. Please also read widely regarding our industry and the latest news and trends in order to come prepared with your views and opinions
- We would also encourage you to come and visit us on campus to speak to our representatives and learn more about the opportunities we have available
The application form:
- Personal details – ensure you submit the correct telephone number and email address so we are able to contact you promptly. Please also advise us of any changes to these details throughout the application process
- Education – list your most recent educational information first and continue in chronological order. If you are planning to continue your studies and are yet to start this degree course, ensure this is also listed on your application or CV/resume
- Work history – list your most recent work experience first and continue in chronological order. Ensure that you have completed this section with as much relevant information as possible, including your employer's name, address, location. Summarise your experience referring to the skills you have gained and projects you have undertaken that you feel make you suitable for the programme you have applied to
- Interests and achievements: We actively seek to recruit people from a diverse range of backgrounds and interests. Ensure that you have listed all your interests, hobbies and achievements on your application. The skills you have acquired outside of your academic achievement and work experience will likely be equally as valuable to us
- Your application form can be completed in stages. Ensure you have taken the time to fully and carefully review your answers prior to submitting your application form. Attention to detail and accuracy is vital and makes a strong first impression
- Make sure you take a note of your unique username and password log-in details, in order to return to your application form and check the progress of your application after submission
- We actively encourage and welcome applicants from all degree disciplines; however, all applicants will need to demonstrate a genuine and proven motivation for a career in financial services, HSBC and the programme/business they have applied to
- Once you are entirely happy with your application, submit your form. Please note that, once submitted, your application cannot be modified
- Use spell check and review your grammar prior to submitting your application. First impressions count and even minor errors may impact the progression of your application
- Print out your completed application form as a reference
Your CV/resume:
Your CV/resume is our first impression of you as an individual, providing us with an overview of your key skills, experience, interests and selling points. It is vital that you therefore ensure all information is correct, true and representative, and that the presentation makes a clear and lasting impression.
Cover letter:
- Ensure your cover letter (if applicable) is addressed to the right organisation. This may sound obvious to you but as your potential employer we do not wish to receive an application that is directed to another organisation. Attention to detail is key
- Ensure your cover letter is tailored to HSBC and demonstrates your motivation for wishing to join our organisation, not a generic letter circulated to our competitors
- The cover letter should not repeat any points that can be easily noted from your CV/resume
- Upload your CV/resume and cover letter as one attachment
- Your CV/resume should not be more than two pages in length
The interview:
- Do your research properly – it shows and pays dividends. Be sure to research widely and come informed, looking beyond what we have written on our website and in our brochure
- Be yourself and be honest. Integrity is very important to us
- We are looking for strong, well-rounded individuals with wide ranging experiences that go beyond the classroom
- You should be able to clearly express with evidence why you want to join us at HSBC and why you have chosen the programme you are applying to
- Can you tell us what sets us apart from the competition? Have you got a solid argument for why you would be suitable? Practice beforehand and come prepared
- Practice interview techniques such as the STAR technique:
Situation – what was the situation?
Task – what was your task?
Action – what did you do?
Result – what was the outcome? Also, what did you learn from this situation?
- Prepare for the different stages of the assessment by using various sources – for example, in preparation for the numerical skills tests, practice at www.shldirect.com
